So I watched this new Nollywood movie called “Lagos Hustlers” this weekend and it was actually insane. My older cousin said it just came out this year and I didn’t think I’d like it because Nigerian movies can sometimes be really long and boring, but this one was totally different. It’s basically about these three kids who are like, maybe 19 or 20, trying to survive in Lagos and make enough money to not be poor anymore. The whole vibe of the movie is super fast and the music they play in the background makes everything feel really intense, like an Afrobeats music video but with a story.
The main characters are Emeka, Tobi, and this girl named Zara. Emeka is the smart one who knows how to code and build apps, Tobi is the class clown who is always getting them into trouble by talking too much, and Zara is like the tough one who doesn’t take crap from anyone. They all live in this tiny apartment in Yaba and you can tell they are super broke because they are always eating indomie. I lowkey felt bad for them at the beginning because Tobi’s mom was sick and they needed money fast, which is why they decided to do this really risky job.
Basically, Tobi hears about this guy who will pay them a million naira just to deliver a package to a club on the Island. Emeka is like, “Bro, this is definitely a scam or something illegal,” but Tobi convinces them it’s fine. Of course, it goes super wrong. The package turns out to be a flash drive with like, government secrets or something, and suddenly these huge guys in black SUVs start chasing them all over Lagos. The movie gets really crazy here because they can’t just call the police because the bad guys are actually connected to the police.
There’s this one chase scene that is literally the funniest thing I’ve ever seen. They are stuck in crazy Lagos traffic on the Third Mainland Bridge, and they have to abandon their okada and start running through the go-slow. Tobi trips over a gala cart and just knocks over like fifty sausages, and the vendor starts chasing him too while the bad guys are right behind them. I was laughing so hard my mom told me to be quiet. But it was also scary because Zara almost got caught, but she used pepper spray on the bad guy which was kind of awesome.
The end of the movie is where all the drama happens. They figure out that the guy who hired them actually set them up to take the fall, and they have to break into his fancy house in Lekki to get the evidence to clear their names. There’s a huge fight scene in the living room, and it looked so real, like people were actually getting thrown through glass tables. Then there’s this huge plot twist where you find out Zara has been secretly working for the bad guy the whole time, but she actually turns on him at the last second because she realized the guys were her real friends. It was so predictable but also kind of cool.
I don’t want to spoil the very ending, but let’s just say they don’t keep the money, which was kind of annoying because I wanted them to be rich. But it does set up a part two, which I will definitely watch when it comes out. Overall, I give it like an 8 out of 10. The acting was really good, especially the guy who plays Tobi, and it didn’t feel like a fake movie. If you like action movies that aren’t too scary and have a lot of funny moments, you should totally ask your parents to let you watch “Lagos Hustlers.”
